Looking For America
What happened to America? Where folks give and never ask
The one that Grandpa used to know For anything in return
Is she gone and lost forever? Where church is filled on Sunday
Has she taken a mortal blow? With a genuine concern
Has Washington brought shame? Where families sit down together
Upon the man whose name it bears And talk about their day
Are we taking and not giving? And moms and dads don’t worry
Are we selfish with our prayers? When their kids go out to play
Are her values overshadowed? Yes this is the America I see and love
By greed and shame and scandal And I’m not too proud to cry
Has the night crept up upon her? She’s where I plan to live my life
Has the wind blown out her candle? And she’s where I plan to die
If you’re nodding your head yes So if you’re looking for America
And if you really do agree You won’t find her on the news
Please fold up that newspaper Or in a politicians speech
And quickly turn off your TV Going on about his views
Cause that isn’t where America is She’s you and I, she’s everyone
That just isn’t where she’s found Can I make it clearer?
If you want to find America If you’re looking for America
Take a trip to a little town Start by looking in the mirror.

Where neighbors help each other
And greet strangers on the street
Where honesty is a way of life
And a handshake is concrete
Where a county fair is going on
Somewhere in the west
And old glory she’s a flying proud
And every meal is blessed
